JOHNSON JR. POWERS HIS CHEVY TO 10TH QUALIFYING SPOT AT PHOENIX WITH 4.808-SECOND PASS

CHANDLER, Ariz. (Feb. 26, 2005) -- Tommy Johnson Jr. powered his Skoal RacingSM Funny Car to consistent 4.8-second passes during qualifying Saturday at Firebird International Raceway as the current Funny Car points leader qualified in the No. 10 position at the Phoenix-area track.

Johnson opened the day by driving his Don Prudhomme-owned Chevy to a run of 4.851 seconds at 317.12 mph under the sun at F.I.R. On his final qualifying attempt of the weekend, Johnson used a tune-up from crew chief Mike Green to record his best run of the weekend as he blasted his Monte Carlo to a pass of 4.808 at 323.29 to earn the 10th qualifying position in a field of 22 race cars.

"To make it down twice when the race track is hot and tricky, I'm confident that we can continue to improve," Johnson said. "After looking at the computer, the guys are confident that they can step up if the conditions are the same. It's a pretty tight field. We're looking better than we were come race day at Pomona, so there's no reason not to be confident."

Johnson will face former teammate Ron Capps in round one of Funny Car eliminations Sunday at the CSK Nationals as the Iowa native aims to remain unbeaten in 2005. Johnson has a 4-7 career mark against Capps.
