Capps 10th After First Day of Qualifying at Phoenix
CHANDLER, Ariz. (March 5, 2004) -- After posting two clean, consistent passes down the Firebird International Raceway quarter-mile on Friday, Ron Capps and the green Skoal Racing crew are encouraged with the steady performance of the car.
Capps sits in the No. 10 qualifying spot after powering his John Stewart-tuned Chevy Monte Carlo to a run of 4.908 seconds at 306.26 mph on Friday's second effort. Earlier in the day, the defending race champion drove to a performance of 4.962 at 294.37.
"We expected to run a 4.84 or 4.85 on the second run," Capps said. "It blew through the clutch a little more than we wanted it to, and then spun the tires at the top end of the track. We're trying to find the sweet spot that this new Monte Carlo body likes. The body is wonderful, it's just a matter of finding a happy medium. Tomorrow, we're going to try and set the car up for race day because it's going to be warm on Sunday. I expect it to be a tricky race track come Sunday.
"Talk to any crew chief and they'll tell you that you can't get any data on the pass if the car smokes the tires. We wanted to make sure we went down the track. We didn't have it set on kill, but we wanted to run quicker than we did. We're pleased with what we see from the car."
Capps and the Skoal Racing green squad aim to improve upon their No. 10 qualifying spot when professional qualifying resumes at 1:30 and 4:30 p.m. (MT) on Saturday, March 6.
ESPN2 will televise two hours of qualifying highlights from the CSK Nationals beginning at 11 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, March 6 and show three hours of final eliminations at 7 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, March 7.
