DIXON FINISHES SECOND FRIDAY AT PHOENIX
CHANDLER, Ariz. (Feb. 24, 2006) - Two-time NHRA Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon Friday drove Don Prudhomme's Miller Lite dragster to its quickest (4.501 seconds) and fastest (329.91 mph) pass of the 2006 NHRA season Friday at Firebird International Raceway near Phoenix to finish the first day of qualifying in the No. 2 slot.
The three-time Firebird Raceway finalist (1995, 2002-03) opened qualifying for the 22nd annual CSK Nationals by powering his Don Bender-tuned Miller Lite dragster to a blistering 4.501-second, 329.91-mph effort to claim the second quickest pass of the first qualifying session. Dixon also posted the second best speed of the round. The Miller Lite rail lost traction early during Friday's second qualifying pass and coasted to an 11-second E.T., but remained second in the 16-car Top Fuel order.
"We made a great first run," Dixon said. "By the way the Funny Cars were running, Donnie (Bender) was trying to run a 4.52 or .53. We worked on the engine from Pomona and the way it was running through the middle of the track, it stepped up to a 4.50. That got us qualified deep in the field.
"We've never been a good night car. We have a lot of stuff we know didn't work, so we're trying some other things. Obviously, that run didn't work, but it was a good information run to learn from and we didn't lose a spot in the order. Now, we can go out on Saturday and work on our race day tune-up."
Professional nitro qualifying will resume at noon and 3:30 p.m. (MT) on Saturday afternoon at the Phoenix-area drag strip.
