PHOENIX, Ariz. (March 7, 2004) -- David Grubnic set a track record but Brandon Bernstein won the final round in the Top Fuel class of the Checker Schuck's Kragen NHRA Nationals as the NHRA's 2004 season continued the torrid pace it started in the season opener at Pomona Raceway a week earlier.

The Top Fuel and Funny Car classes race exclusively on Goodyear tires. Goodyear teams have long dominated the Pro Stock class, which is open to all tiremakers.

Goodyear-shod racers have won nine of the 17 class victories thus far in the young season in NHRA national competition.

Grubnic sped down the Firebird International Raceway quarter-mile in 4.486 seconds, the quickest pass ever made at the popular track. It was the second consecutive race in which an NHRA pro class has set a track record.

Bernstein, who had the best speed of the weekend, 326.63 mph, beat Doug Kalitta in the final round.

Del Worsham beat Tony Pedregon in the final round of Funny Car and Kurt Johnson knocked off Dave Connolly to win the Pro Stock title.
