Millican in Seventh Position Heading Into Sunday's Finals at NHRA CSK Nationals
Phoenix, Ariz. - March 6, 2004 - Clay Millican of Team 104+ Performance Additives/Lehman Racing qualified for the final eliminations at the NHRA CSK Nationals in the number seven position, with an elapsed time of 4.563 at 320.05 mph. [04_headshot.jpg]
Millican, a former forklift driver from Drummonds, Tenn., will face number 10 qualifier David Baca in the first round of eliminations. Millican has a career won-lost record of 0-1 against Baca.
"It's going to be fun racing against him in the first round," said Millican. "We are both sponsored by American Racing, so I know that someone with American Racing wheels will be going to the second round, and I just hope it's us."
In qualifications, Millican made his two best passes of the weekend on Friday, with elapsed times of 4.564 and 4.563. On Saturday, however, the team had some troubles and was unable to make a clean pass down the track. In their first qualifying run of the day, the team clocked a 9.045 e.t. at 79.57 mph. The team did not make a second qualifying pass on Saturday. [104car_Pomona.jpg]
"Before the final pass, we were not comfortable with the way the motor sounded, and elected to shut the car off since we were already qualified," said Crew Chief Mike Kloeber.
In his last race, the NHRA K&N Filters Winternationals, Millican qualified in third position, and advanced to the quarterfinals, where he lost to Brandon Bernstein. Millican is currently in 5th place in the NHRA POWERade Top Fuel points standings.
Millican is the 2001-2003 IHRA Top Fuel Champion with Team Werner/Lehman Racing, and will race in at least 8 NHRA races this year, while also competing a full IHRA schedule and going for his fourth consecutive IHRA Top Fuel Championship with the Werner team.
Sunday's final eliminations at the Firebird International Raceway begin at 11:00 a.m. PT.
