On the strength of a 6.943-second, 199.35 mph run posted in Saturday morning's session, Tom Martino qualified his CENTURY 21( Pro Stock Firebird 13th for Sunday's final eliminations of the Checker Schuck's Kragen Nationals in Phoenix, Arizona. Martino's opponent in the first round will be Mark Pawuk, who Martino defeated in their last encounter in Dallas, Texas last fall. Without the advantage of lane choice, Martino realizes it will take an outstanding effort to advance on Sunday.

"We're happy to have gotten in the field, but we did it purely on horsepower. I wouldn't classify any of our runs very highly. This Firebird track is a little tricky, but nothing we shouldn't be able to adapt to. We tried a new clutch system this weekend, and it just isn't working out at the moment, so we'll go back to our proven set-up for tomorrow. The only problem is that we won't have any data for it on this track, so we'll have to make an educated guess for the first round.

"I think we'll be all right tomorrow. We'll need a little luck to get out of the first round - we'd like to see Mark (Pawuk) not make a perfect run against us. If we succeed, we'll tune it up from there, and I know our CENTURY 21( Firebird will be as fast as anyone."
