Pennzoil extends Eddie Hill's contract

HOUSTON (Jan. 11) - The makers of Pennzoil motor oil have announced the continuation of their sponsorship of Top Fuel pilot Eddie Hill. The one-year, major associate deal, which extends the company's relationship with Hill to 11 years, will see the 62-year-old legend compete as both a driver and a crew chief in all 22 races on the National Hot Rod Association's 1999 schedule.

"We're thrilled to extend our agreement with Eddie and Ercie Hill," said Tom Floyd, senior vice president, lubricants marketing for Pennzoil-Quaker State Company. "They are true ambassadors to the sport of drag racing, and we consider it an honor to be associated with them both. We all remember when Eddie won his world championship in the Pennzoil Dragster a few years ago and we're hoping for more of that kind of excitement in 1999."

Hill proved to be one of the most consistent drivers in the NHRA in 1998. He successfully qualified for the elimination rounds of every national event - one of just six drivers to do so - thereby perpetuating his current streak of elimination-round appearances to 40 straight races. The Hall-of-Famer never hesitated to show off his car's power, placing the Pennzoil dragster in the top half of the qualifying field on 14 occasions.

Moreover, Hill closed this year with a spectacular three-race surge. The impressive ending started in Dallas, when Hill positioned his car in the top half of the quickest Top Fuel field ever assembled. A week later in Houston, Hill posted the best elapsed time and speed of his 51-year career with a jaw-dropping 4.574-second, 313.91-mph pass. Hill then finished his season by racing his way into the final round of the prestigious Big Bud Shootout.

"We're ready for another fantastic year in 1999," Hill said. "I already feel that we have assembled the best crew ever, and everyone is anxious to get back to racing. It's great to extend our long-time relationship with Pennzoil. Financially, they've been behind us for 11 years, but Pennzoil has actually been with us for over 40 years. Every race we've ever won, every record we've ever broken and every championship we've ever captured - whether we were in a car, a bike or a boat - was achieved with Pennzoil motor oils."
