NHRA SUMMIT RACING SERIES CONTINUES AT TOP GUN RACEWAY; RACE OF CHAMPIONS WINNERS CROWNED
FALLON, Nev. -- Top Gun Raceway is hosting the NHRA Pacific Division Summit Racing Series Finals. The three day race, which features teams of top points-earning drivers from tracks across the region racing for individual and team honors, kicked off on Friday and will conclude with eliminations on Sunday. Classes in competition are Super Pro, Pro, Sportsman and Motorcycle. Each track may also be represented by a High School category.
Today's action was highlighted by the Race of Champions, a race within a race where the best of the best racers in Super Pro, Pro, Sportsman and Motorcycle from each team square off in head-to-head competition.
In Super Pro, Rob Knoles of Sheridan, Calif., representing Sacramento Raceway wheeled his '69 Camaro to the win over local favorite Lonnie Grace of Fallon who is racing for Top Gun. Mark Miyashiro, Torrance, Calif., racing for Toyota Speedway at Irwindale, earned the win in Pro behind the wheel of his '71 Chevelle. Miyashiro beat Orangevale, Calif., racer Danny Cole in his '69 Camaro in the final. Cole is running for Sacramento Raceway. The Sportsman win went to Gary Hairfield of San Diego, Calif. The Barona 1/8th-Mile Dragstrip racer ousted Las Vegas's Ron Winters in his '68 El Camino. Winters is racing for Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Auto Club Dragway racer John Gidcumb, Riverside, Calif., rode to the win in Motorcycle aboard his '93 Suzuki, beating out David Bothelo, Tracy, Calif., in the final. Bothelo runs for Infineon Raceway. The High School Race of Champions showdown featured two Infineon Raceway competitors. Chris Simas of Napa, Calif., behind the wheel of a '72 Chevelle, earned the win over Nikole D'Amado, also of Napa, in a '69 Nova.
The Race of Champions winners in the top four categories earn the right to run against the winners from NHRA's other six divisions for a national championship at the NHRA Finals in Pomona, Calif., in November. Racers in Pomona will vie for a winner-take-all $5,000 purse.
Racing continues Sunday at Top Gun Raceway. Competitors in Super Pro, Pro, Sportsman and Motorcycle as well as Sport Compact will run eliminations, fighting for individual and team honors.
