BOISE, Idaho -- Firebird Raceway is hosting the NHRA Northwest Division Summit Racing Series Finals. The three day race, which features teams of top points-earning drivers from tracks across the region racing for individual and team honors, kicked off on Friday and will conclude with eliminations on Sunday. Classes in competition are Super Pro, Pro, Sportsman and Motorcycle/Sled. Each track was also allowed to bring a certain number of High School and Sport Compact racers as well as two categories of Junior Dragsters.

Today's action was highlighted by the Race of Champions, a race within a race where the best of the best racers in Super Pro, Pro, Sportsman and Motorcycle/Sled from each team square off in head-to-head competition.

Meridian, Idaho's Ed Cutler wheeled his Vega to the Race of Champions winner's circle after taking the Super Pro win. Cutler defeated Jim Glenn, Camas, Wash. In Pro, Steve Kelly, Vancouver, Wash., scored the win, ousting South Jordan, Utah's Jesse Sanderson in the final. Dallas Glenn, Kent, Wash., earned the Sportsman win over Ken Stevens, Springfield, Ore. In Motorcycle/Sled, Jim Sibley, Edmonds, Wash., rode his Suzuki to victory lane, defeating Mike Cragun, Sandy, Utah.

The Race of Champions winners earn the right to run against the winners from NHRA's other six divisions for a national championship at the NHRA Finals in Pomona, Calif., in November. Racers in Pomona will vie for a winner-take-all $5,000 purse.

Racers in High School and Junior Dragsters ran eliminations on Saturday as well. Eagle, Idaho, racer Courtney Alley earned the win in the High School category, outrunning Amelia MacKay-Smith of Merritt, B.C. Joey Watts, Paterson, Wash., got the win in Junior Lightning (competitors 13 to 17 years old). She beat out Merranda Molinari, Battleground, Wash. The Junior Thunder (competitors 8 to 12 years old) title went to Casey Tehle, Billings, Mont., who beat Twin Falls, Idaho, racer Rayce Kidd.

Also up for grabs on Saturday was the Race of Champions Track Managers Challenge title, a behind the scenes competition where track managers are awarded points for each round of racing their team wins. This year, Woodburn (Ore.) Dragstrip earned its fourth Track Managers Challenge with 35 points. Firebird Raceway was in second place, just one point back.

Racing continues Sunday at Firebird Raceway. Competitors in Super Pro, Pro, Sportsman and Motorcycle/Sled as well as Sport Compact will run eliminations, fighting for individual and team honors, beginning at 9 a.m.

Firebird Raceway is located on Highway 16, five miles north of Highway 44. For more information call the track, (208) 938-8986, or visit www.FirebirdOnline.com.
