NORWALK, Ohio (June 23) -- Morgan Lucas is expecting two things when he and the GEICO Powersports/Lucas Oil Top Fuel team roll into this weekend's Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals -- heat and fireworks.
"It's going to be hot there for sure," Lucas said. "You've got to be on your toes. I hope the good Lord will bless us with nice weather, but I think His version of good weather in late June is going to be heat and no clouds."
But when darkness covers the track, Lucas said he can't wait to see the Summit Motorsports Park track lit up by the glow of the facility's fantastic fireworks display.
"Norwalk is a beautiful facility," Lucas said. "The fireworks display is awesome. It's a lot of fun to watch."
Lucas and the GEICO Powersports team made some fireworks of their own last week in Bristol when they upset Top Fuel points leader Larry Dixon in the first round of the Thunder Valley Nationals. It was arguably the biggest single race of the season.
"We've got a good organization," Lucas said. "With all our funding and everything that's going on, we can't afford to fail. Right now we're proving we're not going to fail."
The youngest professional in the nitro ranks, Lucas is holding steady at seventh in the NHRA Full Throttle Series Top Fuel points with five races to go before the field for the Countdown to 1, the NHRA's postseason, is set.
"We're going to take what we learned in the heat at Bristol and apply it to Norwalk," Lucas said. "We've just got to make the car go down the track. I'd like to see the car go down the track three times in qualifying, and give a run where we push the envelope.
"If we can do that this weekend it's going to show a lot and give a lot of confidence to the team."
