JUNIOR PIPPIN QUALIFIES 14TH FOR NORWALK SUCCESSFULLY ENDING HIS NON-QUALIFYING DROUGHT
NORWALK, OHIO, June 28, 2008- Junior Pippin, the 55-year-old rookie rider of the PiranaZ Racing/Pippin Racing S&S-powered V-Twin pro stock motorcycle qualified 14th for tomorrow's Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals here at Summit Motorsports Park. After two rainy days of qualifying, Pippin cracked the top 16 and qualified with a 7.137 e.t. at 186.74-mph. During the first two qualifying runs, Pippin ran a7.208 e.t. at 182.11-mph and 7.254 e.t. at 176.01-mph respectively.
"The motorcycle went a lot faster on the third round, and I'm happy I qualified," commented the Conyers, Ga. native. Pippin, who did not qualify for the last two events, jokingly credited his successful effort to his new uniform.
"I got my new PiranaZ leathers on today, and I went faster. I didn't do anything different, so it's got to be the leathers."
Pippin will face Steve Johnson, the number three qualifier, who ran a 7.058 e.t. at 186.28- mph tomorrow during the first round of eliminations. This weekend has had its fair share of weather issues.
Due to the rain, there were delays throughout the two days of qualifying. On day one of qualifying, after the pro stock motorcycles ran a session, water started seeping up from the ground and onto the track which ended the day's activities. Scattered rain showers caused a few delays today, but the pro stock motorcycles were able to finish the last two qualifying sessions.
There were only three sessions for tomorrow's race.
"Now, my goal is to crack the top half. We're on the right track as we got faster during the three sessions, and as long as we stay on track we'll be just fine," said Pippin. Coming into Norwalk, Pippin is currently 13th in the 2008 NHRA POWERade Countdown to the Championship point standings with 144 points, 412 points behind the leader.
