MASSEY, ANDERSON ARE TOP QUALIFIERS ON FIRST DAY OF RACING AT THUNDER VALLEY RACEWAY

NOBLE, Okla. -- In the first rounds of qualifying at Thunder Valley Raceway's Thunder in the Heartland event, a round of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Top Alcohol Dragster driver Spencer Massey, Fort Worth, Texas, is the No. 1 qualifier in his class and Erie, Colo., resident Paul Anderson set the pace in Top Alcohol Funny Car.

There are 16 cars vying for the eight qualifying spots in Top Alcohol Dragster and Massey, the reigning division champion, led them with a 5.442-second, 264.23 mph pass. The No. 2 qualifier is local favorite Brandon Pierce of Moore. Pierce laid down a 5.460-second run at 255.75 mph. Another Moore resident, Aaron Tatum is currently outside the field, in the No. 14 spot.

Anderson's 5.738-second, 250.55 mph pass put him at the top of the Funny Car field where there are 13 cars trying to make it into Sunday's elimination rounds. Marty Nothstein's 5.795-second, 248.82 mph run was just off the pace, putting the Orefield, Pa., racer in the No. 2 spot. Oklahoma City's Ron Morrison is on the outside looking in, having qualified in the No. 12 position.

Top qualifiers in other classes include Jim Cowan, Dewey, Ariz., in Comp Eliminator; Jimmy DeFrank, Chatsworth, Calif., in Super Stock; Dean Oliver, Stuttgart, Ark., in Comp Eliminator; Greg Lair, Canyon, Texas, in Top Sportsman; Mike Manners, Willis, Texas, in Top Dragster; and Jason Clampitt, Lino Lakes, Minn., in Sportsman Motorcycle.

Racing continues Saturday and Sunday at Thunder Valley Raceway. Gates open at 8 a.m. both days. Qualifying and time trials continue Saturday at 9 a.m. Top Sportsman and Top Dragster qualify at 10 a.m. and noon. Comp Eliminator, Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car competitors will run at 1 and 5 p.m. Eliminations start Sunday morning at 9. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will run first round at noon.

Tickets for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Thunder Valley Raceway are $15 Saturday and $20 Sunday. Children 5 to 10 years old are $5 each day and kids under 5 are admitted free with a paid adult. Military personnel receive a $5 discount each day.
