Toyota Drivers Worsham, Pedregon Sweep Nitro #1 Qualifiers In Denver
Del Worsham earned his fourth number one qualifier in Top Fuel, while Cruz Pedregon notched his third in record fashion in Funny Car as Toyota drivers swept the Nitro pole positions in preparation for Sunday’s NHRA Full Throttle Series Mile High Nationals at the Bandimere Speedway in Morrison, Colo.
Pedregon wowed the crowd on Friday night by running a 4.095-second pass, nearly a full-tenth ahead of the next-quickest car in setting a new track record in the high altitude track in the foothills of suburban Denver. It was the third time this season that Pedregon has been the top qualifier in his Snap-On Toyota Camry Solara Funny Car with the others coming at Pomona and Englishtown.
“It was the run of my career,” said Pedregon. “When you consider the altitude and the thin air, I consider this to be better than our 4.02.”
Worsham registered the quickest pass in each of Friday’s two Top Fuel qualifying sessions in earning his third number one qualifying position in the last five races. The long-time Funny Car driver turned Top Fueler has now qualified in the top two in six of the last seven races. He has won two of the previous races as top qualifier (Charlotte and Norwalk) and advanced to the finals in the other (Englishtown). He will take a commanding point lead into Sunday’s eliminations.
“Any time you’re the number one qualifier it’s a thrill, but it’s just a testament of how good this Al-Anabi team is,” said Worsham. “After last night’s run, we were able to try some different things today and hopefully learned some things we can use tomorrow in eliminations.”
Shawn Langdon turned in another strong qualifying effort with a fifth, marking his third top-five qualifying effort in the last six races. Antron Brown placed eighth, Larry Dixon qualified 10th and Morgan Lucas rounded out the Toyota contingent in 14th.
Worsham, Dixon and Brown enter tomorrow’s eliminations occupying the first, third and fourth positions in the Top Fuel point standings, while Pedregon begins Sunday’s action in fourth-place in Funny Car.
