Spencer Massey Wants To Stay On Winning Track Rolling Into Fram/Autolite NHRA Nationals
Spencer Massey would like nothing more than to bring his FRAM/Autolite Top Fuel dragster back to the winner’s circle at the conclusion of this weekend’s 24th-annual FRAM/Autolite NHRA Nationals here at Infineon Raceway mirroring his stunning victory at the Denver race one week ago.
Last weekend’s triumph brought the 28-year-old Don Schumacher Racing driver his third Wally of the 2011 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series season, clinched a position in the Countdown to 1 playoffs and brought him to within four race-round wins of Top Fuel points’ leader Del Worsham.
“What a great way to start the Western Swing and get ready for our FRAM race,” exclaimed a jubilant Massey. “I’m looking to keeping my momentum going, hopefully right into victory lane come Sunday.
“Of course, we always want to do well for the great people at FRAM/Prestone/Autolite, who have been great supporters all year, as well as doing well for Don (Schumacher) and the rest of DSR.”
Massey started the Denver event from the fourth-qualifying position, and defeated Brandon Bernstein, Shawn Langdon and DSR teammate Antron Brown before a final-round match with seven-time world champion and DSR teammate Tony Schumacher.
“Regardless of the outcome both in the semifinals and finals, we knew there were wins coming for DSR, which is great,” said the Fort Worth native. “We wanted it to be the FRAM/Prestone car and were thrilled with the outcome.
“But that last round was not easy. Both Tony and I fought against the slippery, hot track in the thin air of Denver, and I was able to just beat him.”
More than half-way through his sophomore season, Massey, the 2009 rookie of the year in Top Fuel who sat out virtually the entire 2010 season, heads into the second race of the grueling Western Swing (consecutive weekends in Denver, Sonoma and Seattle) closer to first in the standings (68 points) than third (157 ahead of Larry Dixon).
“Everything is just great,” remarked Massey. “I am living my dream, driving a Top Fuel dragster. And winning like this means every day is like living in a fairytale land.
“I can’t say enough about the great car Todd, Phil (Okuhara, Shuler, co crew chiefs) and the entire FRAM/Prestone team give me each weekend. I just have to do my job – get a good light then stab (the throttle) and steer to get these kinds of results.”
