Lucas Oil Racing press release
Despite plenty of fight, Langdon falls short in Lucas Oil dragster
LAS VEGAS (Oct. 30) – A night watching UFC 137 in person put Shawn Langdon a fighting spirit for Sunday's eliminations at the Big O Tires NHRA Nationals. Unfortunately, the Lucas Oil/Speedco wasn't up for the challenge.
Langdon, who qualified 16th, lost to Del Worsham in the first round of eliminations on Sunday at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, but Langdon said watching the mixed martial arts fighters ply their trade got his adrenaline flowing.
"I had a blast; it was such a good time," Langdon said. "When you are out in Las Vegas there are so many nightlife options. The main event last night was spectacular. The crowd was pumped, and I could feel my adrenaline level going up."
Langdon said he saw many similarities between MMA and NHRA.
"You can see it watching the guys during the prefight," Langdon said. "While they are getting introduced you can see the passion and intensity in their eyes. You relate to that because we get that way before first round.
"It's cool to go to other events and see people as passionate about what they do as we are passionate about drag racing."
Against Worsham, Landgon and the Lucas Oil rail had to push the envelope a bit, and the car wound up smoking the tires.
"We did qualify 16th, and when you do that you are going to face the best guy out there," Langdon said. "We knew we weren't going to win trying to go 3.90, so we tried some different things. It helped the car accelerate, but because we didn’t have lane choice we ended up in the bad lane. To add salt to wound we ran over something and cut a tire, which made them junk.
"It's unfortunate, but just part of drag racing. You have to take the good with the bad."
Worsham breezed through with a finish of 3.8656 seconds at 314.02 mph, while Langdon coasted across in 5.519 seconds at 129.62 mph.
