Ron Capps Drives Napa Auto Parts Funny Car Into NHRA Northwest Nationals Field
Fresh off his first victory of the year, Ron Capps piloted the NAPA Auto Parts Dodge R/T Funny Car into the NHRA Northwest Nationals 16-car field here Saturday during final qualifying at Pacific Raceways.
Following an impressive win in Sonoma, Calif. last Sunday, Capps eased into the 11th starting spot for the 14th race of the season and in the process set up a first round match up with his Don Schumacher Racing teammate, Johnny Gray, who qualified sixth.
“Yesterday was quite challenging given the track conditions, but the NHRA did a nice job in evening out the lanes and we were able to take advantage of that,” said Capps, who recorded a 4.201-second pass at 293.98 miles per hour. “I was happy we were able to get down both lanes here today.
“As I’ve been saying since he joined us, Tim Richards is a great crew chief and not only do I have full confidence in him but also the entire NAPA team.”
Relative to the opening round encounter with Gray, Capps understands facing off with a teammate is eventually going to happen. He beat Gray in the second round at Infineon Raceway en route to his 32nd win.
“It’s unfortunate one of the DSR Funny Cars is going to go home early, but that’s just the way it is,” said Capps. “We both have to go out and do our jobs and may the better driver, car and team win. That’s what Don and our sponsors expect of us.”
On Sunday, Capps will be seeking to solidify his position in the Funny Car standings as the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series closes in on the Countdown to 1.
“Presently, we are in sixth, but certainly we want to move up over these next few races,” he said. “Counting this one, we have three races to go before the playoffs start. We want to be humming along by the time we get to Charlotte and then go out and seriously challenge for the world championship.”
