BRAINERD, Minn. (August 25, 2011) – Hot Rod Fuller advanced to the quarter finals at Brainerd International Raceway this past weekend, where the Yas Marina Circuit team competed in the 30th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals with the newly added sponsor, DIGIORNO® Pizza, on board. This event occupies the 13th stop along a 22-race tour for the 2011 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, and Fuller’s fourth stop along his 10-race tour for this season.

The weekend began with some changes to the car before first round. A new part was being tested as well, which ended up causing too much power on the race track and resulted in the car smoking the tires. The team then changed back to a more conservative set-up in order to guarantee themselves a good qualifying shot. The team ran a 3.96 ET (elapsed time) and jumped up to the no. 5 spot.

Rashed Alqubaisi pulls triple duty at the race track most weekends as assistant crew chief, team manager and research and development specialist.

“Rashed came up with some new ideas to make the car go faster so we applied a few of those changes to the car. We were also testing a new part on the car that just came in. We did make more power after those changes, but it was too much and we smoked the tires first round of qualifying. We went back and took that part off and tried a more conservative set-up to make sure we could get down (the track). We ran a 3.96 ET, which was good, and that made us even more excited for Saturday because we knew the weather was supposed to be good,” Fuller said.

Saturday did bring great weather for the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals. Fuller posted a 3.842 at 322 mph for his third qualifying shot. By the end of the day, Fuller was seated comfortably in the no. 6 position and he would face Shawn Langdon in the opening round of eliminations on Sunday.

“We were super confident going into Sunday, but still not letting our guard down because (Shawn) Langdon is one of the toughest guys to run against. He’s always quick off the line and that team has done really well in the past at Brainerd International Raceway,” Fuller said.

Fuller took the win against Langdon in a great side-by-side drag race. He put up a 3.868 ET at over 321 mph. Fuller is now 3-0 against Langdon.

“That was a great race against Langdon and it was really close. We tuned up the car afterwards and went a little too aggressive second round against Tony (Schumacher). You tend to push too hard when you run Tony in eliminations. We have to make the right decisions and hope for great passes for everything to work out. We know that our car is fast and we know what it is capable of. We’ll be testing this week and we’re all pumped to get re-tuned and hit Indy!” Fuller said.
