Infinenon Raceway Sears Point
Infineon has always been good to GEICO pro Lucas
If there was ever a track where Morgan Lucas can expect a momentum shift, that place would be Infineon Raceway, site of this weekend's FRAM-Autolite NHRA Nationals.
Lucas has been racing at Sonoma since the very beginnings of his career and has experience success in every car he's run down the track. This weekend, he's hoping that success translates to the GEICO/Lucas Oil Top Fuel dragster.
"Between national and divisional events, I've won at Sonoma six times," Lucas said. "I got my first national event win there in a Top Alcohol Dragster. It's a track with a lot of special memories for me. I've been racing there since 1995."
A little Infineon magic would do wonders for Lucas and the GEICO team, which slid from eighth to ninth in the NHRA Full Throttle Series Top Fuel standings last week in Denver.
"We've got to get some momentum going and get some more points," Lucas said. "We need to get this car to the later rounds to put ourselves in position to win.
"Smoking the tires isn't going to get us there."
Lucas said the team might take a different approach during this crucial stretch run before the start of the Countdown to the Championship.
"We're going to have to focus on going A to B," Lucas said. "No matter how fast or slow the laps might be. We just need a good weekend. A good weekend would turn everybody's attitudes around 180 degrees.
"If we were to win in Sonoma it would help carry that positive emotion all through the rest of the season, because of how much I love that track."
The trip to the Bay Area and won't be all business. Sonoma is in the middle of the NHRA's Western Swing and an opportunity for driver and crew alike to relax.
"This is a great time of year to be out West," Lucas said. "The team travels together and we make sure to have fun together while we're out here."
