Troxel earns a lofty perch in Funny Car elimination field
Melanie Troxel earned one of her best qualifying spots of the season in her ProCare Rx Toyota Funny Car Saturday at the O'Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Route 66 Nationals.
Troxel qualified fifth on the ladder with a best lap of 4.155 seconds at 285.29 mph, her second-best starting slot of the year. Bob Bode will be her first-round opponent. He qualified 12th with a best pass of 4.246 seconds at 285.29 mph.
"We went down the track in Q2 and Q3, and made good runs," she said. "We're happy with those runs. In our last run we were shooting for that No. 1 spot, but it doesn't have any reflection on what's going to happen tomorrow. I'm confident about what the car is doing heading into Sunday."
That confidence comes with a measure of caution, however. The qualifying schedule featured no laps under the noonday sun, which is about when Troxel and Bode will have their first-round battle.
"The guys feel like they have a pretty good handle on things," Troxel said. "As a driver, you shouldn't let these situations effect anything. It's you against your lane.
"For me it's going to be a continuation of cutting a good light."
After not qualifying for the first five races of the season, Troxel has now made it into six races in a row.
"The car is really smooth," she said. "I don't have to think 'What happens if it smokes the tires' before I even get to the line.
"Now I'm just able to focus on cutting the light, which is ideal situation for the driver. I focus on the Christmas tree and what happens after that, happens."
