Morgan closing in on the impossible dream -- making NHRA playoffs
Fresh off a runner-up finish at his home track in Ohio, Pro Stock veteran Larry Morgan is banking on his good fortune in the Lucas Oil Ford Mustang crossing over a couple of state lines to this weekend's 14th annual O'Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Route 66 Nationals.
"Leaving Ohio on a good note is a good thing," Morgan said. "This good vibe we're enjoying at the moment is for us and all the people who help us."
Although thrilled by his strong run in the Buckeye State, Morgan said he's not resting on his success.
"We're working on some new engine parts we're going to try out," Morgan said. "I'm looking forward to that more than anything. We really believe these new parts are going to help us move forward that much more."
Morgan's recent success has put him in the running to make this season's Countdown to the Championship, the NHRA's version of the playoffs. He is in 12th place in the Pro Stock points, 51 points behind 10th place Ron Krisher. Only the top 10 cars in each professional category qualify for the Countdown to the Championship.
"That's got us real excited," Morgan said. "The program has been coming along and we're doing good for Lucas Oil, Summit, and Ford. I'm anxious to see if we can make up some more ground over in Chicago this weekend.
"For us to make the Countdown just a year and a half into this program with Ford would surprise some people, I promise you. It was the impossible dream, but we're only a few rounds out now. We're going to do what we can to make it happen."
