BRAINERD, Minn. (Aug. 20) -- Lucas Oil drag racers Shawn Langdon and Larry Morgan won't be considered favorites when the elimination rounds of the 30th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals begin Sunday morning at Brainerd International Raceway, but it would be a mistake to underestimate them.

Langdon, who qualified 11th in his Lucas Oil/Speedco Top Fuel dragster, finds himself with a fairly consistent, if not spectacularly fast racecar as he prepares to take on part-time pro Rod Fuller. Langdon won't be able to choose his preferred lane as Fuller's 3.845 at 322.11 mph was a tad quicker than his 3.876 at 310.27 mph, earning Fuller lane choice. Still, Langdon knows he has a good chance.

"The car's showing potential of running stronger, so that's good," Langdon said. "We've got 'Hot Rod' first round, so we'll see how it goes. It'll be a good race. I actually think we're in pretty good shape."

"Today, the first run wasn’t a good run. We went down the track, yeah, but I was happier with the second run when we smoked the tires. The first run, we only went 3.90, which was lazy and slow the whole way. The next run, we were trying to move up a couple spots in the ladder and just overpowered the track halfway along. But the early numbers on that run were really good.

"I thought the 3.87 we ran Friday night was a stout run, and it was, but what happened was all the people behind us saw us running well, so they stepped it up." {{

Morgan has his own hurdle to clear in Pro Stock as he'll face No. 3 qualifier and past series champion Mike Edwards in the opening frame. Edwards topped out at 6.591 seconds and 208.75 mph, compared to Morgan's 6.629 at 208.10 mph. Still, Morgan's Lucas Oil Ford Mustang has shown it's capable of winning big rounds.

"This car's not exactly where we want it to be," Morgan said. "We missed it a little bit. I'm thinking we have a little problem with one of the carburetors. I've been working on that. For the most part, we've qualified OK here and we've done OK, but we need to catch fire tomorrow and win this race so we can get in the top 10."

Entering the weekend, Morgan was 31 points behind 10th-place racer Ron Krisher and just 12 points ahead of Ronnie Humphrey. Each round on Sunday is worth 20 points.

"I'm ready," Morgan said. "I don't care what any of those other guys do. All I know is we need to go as many rounds as we can. Those guys will take care of themselves. I'm thinking all we can do is do what we know how to do and we'll be fine."

Eliminations begin at 11 a.m. Sunday from Brainerd International Raceway with ESPN2 broadcasting the action at 8 p.
