Lucas Oil Racing press release
Langdon looking to upset Dixon in Charlotte's opening round
CHARLOTTE (Sept. 17) – Shawn Langdon and the Lucas Oil/Speedco Top Fuel dragster team know they are starting the NHRA's Countdown to the Championship and Sunday's eliminations at the O'Reilly Auto Parts Nationals at the bottom of a steep hill, but there's no quit in the Lucas Oil pit.
Langdon qualified No. 14 on the Top Fuel ladder and draws No. 3 qualifier Larry Dixon in the first round on Sunday. Dixon is the defending series champion.
"You kind of get your back against the wall," Langdon said. "You develop this attitude that you are going to throw everything at the tune-up in the first round. As we say, it's either going to go or it's going to blow."
Once the smoke cleared, Langdon had a best qualifying pass of 3.861 seconds at 317.49 mph. Dixon, who has the best ET for most of the weekend, ran a 3.775 at 320.89 mph for his lap of record.
"The top five cars have been winning all the races this year and they are a step ahead of the rest of the field," Langdon said. "It's unfortunate we're in the bottom half. We always give Larry a good race. We seem to be trading wins against each other lately. It's going to be an excellent race tomorrow."
Overcast skies have dominated the Charlotte area all weekend long, which has made conditions optimal for monster runs. It's a trend Langdon expects to continue.
"Conditions will be favorable," Langdon said. "It's just going to be a matter of throwing good runs down. You might see us throw out some stellar numbers because you have to try against a team like Larry's."
