ANTRON BROWN TO START FIFTH IN SUNDAY’S BIG O TIRES NHRA NATIONALS
LAS VEGAS, October 29, 2011 – Championship points leader Antron Brown, aboard the Matco Tools Top Fuel dragster, captured the fifth-starting spot today for Sunday’s 11th-annual Big O Tires NHRA Nationals here on The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
The 35-year-old New Jersey native used a final-qualifying run of 3.841 seconds at 319.60 miles per hour to earn a first-round race against Don Schumacher Racing and U.S. Army teammate Tony Schumacher.
“This won’t be easy, but it never is in Top Fuel,” said Brown who will bring a 16-point lead over DSR teammate Spencer Massey in the Countdown to the Championship standings when final eliminations commence at 11 a.m. PDT. “We’d rather be racing another team, but Tony’s also in the hunt for the championship, so we’ll go at it as hard as we do every round. We just put our head down, get to work and go after every round.”
The field behind Brown was shuffled during qualifying with Massey passing Larry Dixon, who trails the Matco Tools driver by 20 points, while pole-sitter Del Worsham moved to within 38 points of the lead, less than two rounds.
“It’s a war out there,” he said. “This championship should come right down to the wire. We want to do well here and strengthen our position before the last race of the season (two weeks from now in Pomona, Calif.). If we do our job, and with Mark and Brian (Oswald and Corradi, co-crew chiefs) calling the shots we should, we’ll be in good shape.
“My confidence is reinforced because we had our best run when the track was at its trickiest, again a testament to the excellence of this Matco Tools/U.S. Army team.”
Brown put together runs of 3.941 at 315.56 mph and 3.863 at 318.54 mph in Friday’s opening rounds. He smoked the tires in today’s first session before the run which earned him the fifth spot.
