Antron Brown Grabs Eighth Starting Spot For Sunday’s Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals
Antron Brown, who directs the Matco Tools Top Fuel dragster, claimed the eighth starting position here Saturday during final qualifying for the 32nd-annual MOPAR Mile-High NHRA Nationals at Bandimere Speedway.
Brown used his Friday pass of 4.057 seconds at 301.87 miles per hour to set up a meeting with ninth-place qualifier Terry McMillen in the first round of final eliminations beginning at 11 a.m. MT.
“The track up here on the mountain has been real tricky,” said the 35-year-old New Jersey native. “But, we’re going to keep making adjustments so we can get where we need to be. We are going to keep our heads down and do what’s necessary to go rounds.”
It will be just the second match up for Brown and McMillen during the 2011 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series season. He beat McMillen in the second round at Atlanta Dragway in May en route to his first win of the season.
“I haven’t faced him very much, but I know he’s a tough competitor,” said Brown. “You can’t make any mistakes against him and his team or else you are going to be heading home very early.”
Brown and McMillen will likely be the first pair of competitors to hit the track on Sunday, which does not concern the former Pro Stock Motorcycle rider.
“That’s okay – we have lane choice and we’ll just do what we need to do,” said Brown. “As always, we are going to race the race track and take what it gives us. We’ll keep making adjustments until we get it right. It’s a matter of being poised when the bell rings.”
Brown arrived in the Denver area holding fourth in the Top Fuel standings. He would like to begin building some momentum as the Countdown to 1 draws closer.
“We have the Western Swing (Denver, Sonoma, Calif. and Seattle on successive weekends) and then Brainerd (Minn.) and Indianapolis before the playoffs,” he said. “We would like to collect some wins going into that last six-race stretch run.”
