GALLANT, FERRO LEAD QUALIFIERS IN RAIN-SHORTENED DAY AT RACEWAY PARK

ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. -- Qualifying is complete at the Raceway Park's NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event. With the threat of rain looming, NHRA and track officials worked to all the qualifying in. Their efforts paid off with three out of the five qualifying classes getting all of their planned runs before rain washed out the day. Racers in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny car were scheduled for two runs today but only got one. Officials plan to give them a second shot before eliminations on Sunday. Boxboro, Mass., racer Arthur Gallant lead the charge in Top Alcohol Dragster while Mickey Ferro, Stamfield, Conn., set the pace in Top Alcohol Funny Car.

Gallant, a former national champion, blistered the
quarter-mile with a 5.372-second, 272.34 mph pass. It was just enough to
hold off Mike Kosky of Cuddy, Pa. Kosky ran 5.393 seconds at 263.67 mph.

Ferro's 5.611-second run at 257.58 mph bested Top Alcohol Funny Car ace and local favorite Frank Manzo of Morganville. Manzo made a 5.620-second, 260.11 mph pass.

In other qualifying classes, David Eaton, Merritt Island, Fla., maintained his top spot in Comp Eliminator as did Super Stock racer Gary Ewing of Bel Air, Md. Steve Ficacci, East Hanover, N.J. superseded Steve Szupka of Willow Grove, Pa., as the No. 1 qualifier in Stock Eliminator.

Racing continues Sunday at Raceway Park and the action will include final eliminations. Gates open at 8 a.m. and eliminations start at 10 a.m. If time allows, racers in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will have a final qualifying pass before starting eliminations. Otherwise, the current fields will stand.

Tickets for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Raceway Park are $20 Sunday. Children 6 to 11 years old are $5 each day and kids 5 and under are admitted free. For more information call the track, (732) 446-7800, or visit www.RacewayPark.com.
