CHAMPIONS CROWNED; ORP TAKES TEAM TITLE
INDIANAPOLIS -- O'Reilly Raceway Park took home the Team Championship on the heels of Super Pro racer Bob Locke today at the 32nd Annual NHRA North Central Division Summit Racing Series Finals in Indianapolis.
The team from ORP scored its fourth Team Championship picking up 51 points and their share of $10,000 in team championship awards. Landing in the 2nd and 3rd spots were the teams from Beech Bend Raceway Park and Summit Motorsports Park respectively.
In the Pro ET class, Joe Lee running out of Beech Bend Raceway Park and Erlanger, Ky., outran Curt Mcclure in his '95 S-10 at 7.355 seconds. The Lawrenceburg, Ind., racer Mcclure runs for Tri State Dragway who finished seventh in the team standings.
Jimmy Barrett and Chad Isley will join Lee, as today's winners will advance to the Summit Racing Series National Championship held in Pomona, Calif. in mid-November. Summit Division Champions form each of the seven NHRA Divisions compete for the National Championship and a $5,000 winner take all purse. Each racer attending the championship in Pomona will also receive $3,500 from Summit Racing Equipment.
Barrett of Havana, Ill., and Midstate Dragway, faced off against Chris Schneider in the Sportsman final and took the win over the Elyria, Ohio, racer from Summit Motorsports Park.
The Charleston, Ill., rider Isley won in the Pro Bike class from Coles County Dragway over Phillip Freeland of National Trail Raceway and Pleasantville, Ohio.
Racers and officials battled Mother Nature throughout the weekend with heavy rains returning late Sunday forcing the postponement of the Super Pro semifinal and final rounds until Monday at 10 a.m. Lance Stillwell and Bryan Merkel will face off in one semifinal that will also decide 8th and 9th place in the team standings as Action City Dragway (Stillwell) and Pacemakers Dragway Park (Merkel) are tied at 32 points each. Locke will face the winner in the final as he has a semifinal bye and will advance to the Super Pro final.
Eliminations for the High School class have been canceled for this weekend and have been re-scheduled for Saturday, October 11th as part of the NHRA Fall Classic National Open here at O'Reilly Raceway Park.
