Payne hoping to fire up fans at Pomona finale

POMONA, Calif. (Nov. 11) -- Born and raised in Southern California, world champion drag racer Jay Payne grew up witnessing the devastation caused by countless wildfires that routinely sweep across the Golden State. Little did he know that one day he'd be racing for a company that is actually making a difference in the never-ending battle against Mother Nature's fury.

Beginning this weekend with the season-ending 46th annual Auto Club NHRA Finals in Pomona, Payne will use his Top Alcohol Funny Car to promote a brand-new "Home Defense Unit" from his title sponsor FireIce that he hopes will soon become a staple in every home that could potentially be threatened by fires.

"We're all about drag racing, going fast, and winning trophies," said Payne, who has won more than 100 national and divisional races in his 40-year career. "But let me tell you, when you see what these Home Defense Units can do, how easy they are to operate, and how much good they can do, my gosh, it's hard not to be impressed.

"Once everyone gets one of these deals all this destruction we see every season will be a thing of the past. We can't stop fires from happening but we can sure protect our stuff better than we ever have before. This is revolutionary and I feel it's my duty to let people know about it. I need to win this race so more people can see my car and find out about these things.

"They used FireIce gel directly on a driver that got in a wreck in New Jersey and it prevented the guy from burning up. The fire was put out, just like that, and they were able to get in there and help the racer. That same gel is what's in the Home Defense Units."

Payne will be trying for his fifth Top Alcohol Funny Car victory of the season in Pomona. He's already driven his FireIce Ford Mustang to national events in Las Vegas 1, Topeka, and Indy, as well as a divisional race in Atlanta.
