Extra chances to win always welcome in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (Oct. 27) -- Multi-time drag racing champion Jay Payne enters this weekend's 10th annual NHRA Las Vegas Nationals with two chances to win. The headline driver from the FireIce/BAE racing stable will challenge for the trophies in both his FireIce Ford Mustang Top Alcohol Funny Car and his FireIce Chevrolet Camaro Pro Mod machine.

"Las Vegas has been very, very good to us," said Payne, who won the Top Alcohol Funny Car class there earlier this year and the Pro Mod title at this event last fall. "Overall, we've won six times at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and it's only been open for 10 years, so our batting average is pretty decent.

"It's actually a lot like a home race to us. Our shops in southern California so everyone can make the drive over without too much trouble. I know we'll have lots of friends around this weekend and that's always a good thing."

Payne has won four Top Alcohol Funny Car races this year but has been shutout of the Pro Mod winner's circle, something he hopes to change this weekend.

"This is the first year where NHRA has recognized Pro Mod as an official class rather than an exhibit deal," the 13-time champion said. "They're giving out Wallys (trophies) now and we'd sure like to get one.

"Roger Burgess put the Get Screened America Pro Mod Drag Racing Series together for us and he's really raised the class to new levels. We all owe him a debt of gratitude and I'm going to make sure and thank him at the banquet Sunday night at the Stratosphere."
