Renewed focus lifts Lucas as he returns to one of his favorite tracks
TOPEKA, Kan. – Sometimes you just need to take some time to clear your head.
Morgan Lucas, driver of the GEICO/Lucas Oil Top Fuel dragster, said that before he heads to this weekend's NHRA Summer Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka, he’s going to spend some time away from all things racing.
"I’m going golfing," Lucas said. "I’ve got a few projects I could be working on at the shop, but instead I am going to use the time to take my mind off of things."
Spare time is in short supply as the NHRA hits its summer schedule. This weekend’s race is the second of five races in seven weeks, which is followed by a similar stretch in July and August.
Feeling refreshed, Lucas said he feels good headed to the Summer Nationals, especially because he and the Topeka track have always meshed well.
"It’s a tough track to get down when it get hot out," Lucas said. "You have to skirt around on a touchy surface. But it does seem like we’ve done a good job getting down those tracks that are hot and slippery.
"For whatever reason, I’ve always had a soft spot for Topeka and can’t wait to put on a show for the fans out there and have some fun."
Lucas is seventh in the Top Fuel points. Later this summer, the top 10 will advance to the NHRA’s version of the postseason, the Countdown to the Championship, so collecting every point available is crucial during these action-packed summer months.
"We’re going to get it working again," said Lucas, a winner earlier this year in Pomona, Calif. "Maybe we need to learn to run 3.9s again and work our way from there. Going down the track every time is going to be important for us to get the data we need to help us improve.
"I feel good. Having a little break reminded me how lucky I am to do what I do for a living. We need to run better but we need to remember to have fun along the way."
