Whisnant Draws Johnson in Round 1.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Mark Whisnant, driver of the RW Performance Pro Stock Chevrolet Cavalier, came to the 15th Annual Mid-South Nationals with two goals. The first goal was to qualify his Chevy for the race on Sunday, and his second goal is to improve his eliminations record.
Today Whisnant, of Stockbridge, Ga., achieved his first goal for this race. It was in the second session of qualifying that Whisnant drove his RW Performance ride to a 6.866 / 200.77 mph to take the tenth position on tomorrow's eliminations ladder. Tomorrow in Round 1, Whisnant will race fellow Georgian Kurt Johnson.
So far this season Whisnant and Johnson have met twice in eliminations. Both times they have met in Round 1, and both times Johnson has come out the victor.
"Round 1 is going to be big for this team," said Whisnant. "To get past Kurt tomorrow morning, will not only help us accomplish the goals we put on ourselves for this race, but it also means we get to take the bragging right back home to Georgia. Bragging rights aside; we are determined to go rounds tomorrow.
"Tonight we will be working overtime getting ready for eliminations. We will make sure all the T's are crossed and i's dotted before we leave here tonight, and them double check it all again in the morning.
"We are working as hard, and are as dedicated, as any team out here; but some times hard work and dedications is not enough. Sometimes you have to have a little luck to go along with it. What we are looking for tomorrow is a little old fashioned racing luck to go along with our hard work and dedication, and hopefully that will get us past Round 1 and all the way to the winner's circle."
Eliminations at the 15th Annual O'Reilly Mid-South Nationals will begin at 11:00 AM EST on Sunday Sept. 22.
