Memphis, Tenn. (Pre-Race) -Mark Whisnant, driver of the RW Performance Chevrolet S-10 Pro Stock Truck, has bittersweet memories from last years race in Memphis, Tenn. It was in Memphis last year that Whisnant DNQ'ed, but it was also the place where the RW Performance team turned a performance corner in their racing program.
This year, as Whisnant and the RW Performance team arrive at the 13th Annual AutoZone Nationals presented by Pennzoil, they would like to turn yet another corner. They would like to make this the race that they achieve their goal of a spot in the Winston Pro Stock Truck top ten.
"Memphis last year was a turning point for us," said Whisnant. "We went through a period where we were constantly blowing the tires off the truck. We couldn't get a handle on our race set-up, consequently we DNQ'ed here last year.
"That DNQ did something to us. It was from that point on we turned around. It was here in Memphis that we learned how to set the truck up for race conditions. That changed everything for us. Although we DNQ'ed we learned a lot. We left Memphis and went on to qualify in Dallas and every race until Gainesville of this year.
"Our goal for Memphis is to qualify in the top half, first and foremost. Then once we get qualified well in the top half, then we can try to go some rounds.
"Right now we need to gain some points on the top ten. The season is winding down, so we have to be on our game or it will be over for us. We can not make any mistakes. If we do, we will be left on the outside looking in.
"I want to be in the top ten at the end of the season. That is the main goal for myself and this RW Performance team. To do that we will have to qualify well, and race on Sunday. Performance wise we turned a corner here last year. I want to stand on the stage in Pomona, and I want to make this years AutoZone Nationals to be the place where we turn the corner in the points and take that spot on the stage I want so badly."
Pro Stock Truck qualifying at the 13th Annual AutoZone Nationals in Memphis, Tenn. begins on Friday Oct. 6, and continues on Saturday Oct. 7. Eliminations take place on Sunday Oct. 8 at 11:00 AM EST.
