SCHUMACHER SIXTH AFTER DAY ONE

MEMPHIS, Tenn., September 26 - U.S. Army Top Fuel pilot Tony "The Sarge" Schumacher slid into the sixth starting position here Friday after the initial day of qualifying for the O'Reilly Mid-South Nationals at Memphis Motorsports Park.

Schumacher's 3.859-second run at 305.29 mph in the evening session was good enough for a top half spot in the order with two qualifying sessions to go on Saturday.

"We'll take it," said the defending POWERade world champion. "We didn't get down the track in the first session, so we had to make sure that we put up a solid run at night."

Heading into tomorrow's action, Schumacher is listed ahead of his nearest competition in the Countdown to One - Antron Brown, Cory McClenathan and Larry Dixon - on the line up sheet.

"It's critical we stay in front of those guys even in qualifying," said Schumacher. "Every point you can get will help you as we head down the stretch these next four races."

Schumacher entered the 21st round of the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series leading Brown by 97 points. McClenathan and Dixon were 104 points and 129 points behind, respectively.

"This Countdown is far from over," added the Chicago-area resident. "We have to stay sharp and focused every time we make a lap. One slip up along the way can cost you big-time."

Schumacher is attempting to capture his fifth consecutive world title and the sixth of his career.

"We're going to have to earn everything the rest of the way, I will guarantee you that," he said. "Nothing comes easy in this sport."
