JOHNSON JR. DRIVES TO NO. 3 SPOT FRIDAY AT MEMPHIS
MILLINGTON, Tenn. (Aug. 19, 2005)-- Tommy Johnson Jr. powered his Skoal RacingSM Chevy Funny Car to the third quickest elapsed time of the day en route to claiming the provisional No. 3 qualifying position Friday at Memphis Motorsports Park.
With blistering summer temperatures reaching into the triple digits, NHRA teams faced the most adverse conditions in recent memory. Johnson, a six-time NHRA winner, drove his Skoal Racing flopper to a run of 6.205 seconds at 156.32 mph on his opening qualifying attempt at M.M.P. Johnson's Monte Carlo launched hard and then spun the tires near mid-track causing the veteran driver to coast to the finish line.
Friday evening as temperatures dipped into the mid-80s, Johnson used a tune-up from crew chiefs Mike Green and Johnny West to race his Chevy flopper to a performance of 4.936 seconds at 299.33 mph to place him third in the 16-car Funny Car order. There are 17 cars attempting to make the cut this weekend.
"With it being as hot as it is and conditions being as bad as they are, I'm really pleased with that run," Johnson said. "I'm happy with the changes the guys made after the first run. To stick it in the No. 3 position is nice because qualifying is so important.
"I really think this is going to be a lane choice track because of the high temperatures. Friday nights are so important, and we were successful again just like last week. We're headed in the right direction with our race team."
Johnson and the Skoal Racing team look to work on their race day tune-up when Funny Car qualifying resumes with sessions scheduled for 4:30 and 7 p.m. (CT) on Saturday at the Memphis track. Johnson has scored wins in both Top Fuel and Funny Car at M.M.P.
