Johnson Jr. Suffers First Round Setback Sunday at Memphis

MILLINGTON, Tenn. (Aug. 22, 2004) -- Tommy Johnson Jr. held his position in the Funny Car point standings Sunday at Memphis Motorsports Park in spite of falling in round one of Funny Car eliminations.

The five-time NHRA winner's blue Skoal RacingSM Chevy Monte Carlo used a slight starting line advantage to take the early lead until Johnson's Chevy flopper shook the tires causing him to pedal the race car, allowing Worsham to drive by and collect the win. Worsham used a run of 5.117 seconds at 289.26 mph to edge Johnson's performance of 5.394 at 244.16.

"We were the first pair out and the different track conditions bit us," Johnson said. "Being the eighth qualifier, we didn't have a choice as to what pair we were. The car was too aggressive early and it shook the tires. When it did, it broke something in the ignition and we were without any ignition the rest of the run."

The next NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series event is the 50th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals, Sept. 1-6, at Indianapolis Raceway Park in Clermont, Ind. Johnson's team owner Don "The Snake" Prudhomme won the prestigious U.S. Nationals seven times as a driver. Johnson advanced to the final round at the U.S. Nationals in 2002.
