Capps Qualifies 16th at Memphis

MILLINGTON, Tenn. (Aug. 21, 2004) -- Ron Capps drove his green Skoal RacingSM Chevy Monte Carlo to the No. 16 qualifying position Saturday at Memphis Motorsports Park.

The 2000 winner of the Memphis race posted his best run of the weekend on Saturday's opening run, when during the heat of the day, Capps used a Roland Leong tune-up to power to a performance of 5.036 seconds at 295.53 mph. On his fourth and final qualifying attempt, Capps' Chevy flopper overpowered the track and the 14-time NHRA winner coasted to a run of 8.706 at 96.25.

"We struggled on the two most important runs, which are the night-session runs," Capps said. "If you don't get in on the night runs, you have to work extra hard to run better during the day. Our best run came during the day, which is a good sign because the first round is at 3 p.m. You can win from anywhere. I'm looking forward to the first round on Sunday."

On Friday, Capps made two passes in his Don Prudhomme-owned Chevy flopper, driving to a run of 5.147 at 281.06 to open qualifying at the Memphis event, before overpowering the Memphis Motorsports Park track on his second qualifying attempt and slowing to a pass of 6.395 at 140.05.

For the third time in four races, Capps will meet Whit Bazemore in the opening round of Funny Car eliminations at 3 p.m. (CT). Capps is 9-17 in his career against Bazemore.
