CAPPS EYES ANOTHER NIGHT WIN
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Aug. 17, 2005) - Ron Capps is on a steady path to the front of the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series Funny Car point standings and welcomes racing at night this weekend at the O'Reilly NHRA Mid-South Nationals in Memphis, Tenn. After all, his first win this season came under the lights in St. Louis in June.
The pilot of the Brut Dodge Stratus R/T Funny Car is right in the middle of one of the more exciting Funny Car battles in NHRA's history as he, his teammate Gary Scelzi and John Force are within one to three round wins of taking over the lead from Robert Hight.
It's anybody's championship at this stage, and fourth-place Capps may be feeling the pressure to win his first Funny Car crown, but he's not showing it. He's focused instead on enjoying himself in the sport he's loved since he was a kid and meeting the challenge of the Memphis heat and track conditions.
"Memphis is another track like Brainerd was (where he earned a semifinal finish last week), where you're going to have adverse conditions," says Capps, in his first season with Don Schumacher Racing. "With first round of eliminations starting on Sunday at 3 o'clock, the crew chiefs are going to have to be on their game. They're going to see late-afternoon qualifying sessions on Friday and Saturday, which will probably be in the night, and then with the first round of eliminations at 3 p.m., weather conditions could be completely different.
"The poor crew chiefs are going to have a lot thrown at them.
"But It's going to be fun to have another night race," he adds. "We won at St. Louis so we love night racing, and with the Funny Car points as close as they are, it just makes every race you pull into that much more fun."
Only 45 points separate the leader Hight from fourth-place Capps. Scelzi is second, 14 points behind, Force is third, just eight points back of Scelzi (22 behind Hight), and Capps is 23 points back of Force.
