Capps Posts First-Round Finish Sunday at Memphis

MILLINGTON, Tenn. (Aug. 22, 2004) 0x2022 Ron Capps raced his green Skoal RacingSM Chevy Monte Carlo to a first-round effort Sunday at Memphis Motorsports Park.

The 14-time NHRA winner was matched up against low qualifier Whit Bazemore in the opening round of Funny Car eliminations. Capps powered to one of his best runs of the weekend, but it wasn't enough to hold off the top qualifier. The Don Prudhomme Racing driver clocked a run of 5.270 seconds at 257.53 mph in his Chevy flopper, while Bazmore used a run of 5.081 at 290.19 to score the round win.

"We faced some different conditions today," Capps said. "It was hot and sunny. The conditions were different from what we dealt with all weekend long. We felt good going in and wanted to make sure we went down the race track. We wanted to go smokeless. We didn't want to give the race away by smoking the tires.

"We're off to Indy for testing on Tuesday and Wednesday. I'm excited because we're going to get some extra track time and to try a few things on the car. I've never won the Nationals and it's our biggest race of the year and the one race everybody wants to win."

The next NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series event is the 50th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals, Sept. 1-6, at Indianapolis Raceway Park in Clermont, Ind. Capps is a three-time winner of the Skoal Showdown bonus event at I.R.P.
