Dixon Qualifies Seventh at Memphis

MILLINGTON, Tenn. (Aug. 21, 2004) -- Larry Dixon raced his Miller Lite dragster to the No. 7 qualifying position Saturday at Memphis Motorsports Parks after using a Dick LaHaie tune-up to record four steady qualifying efforts.

The two-time consecutive NHRA Top Fuel champion powered to his quickest run of qualifying on his final attempt when he drove his Miller-backed dragster to a run of 4.630 seconds at 312.13 mph. On Saturday's first attempt, Dixon raced his Don Prudhomme-owned rail to a run of 4.689 at 306.40 under conditions that will be similar to what the teams will face in the first round on Sunday.

"I don't look any further ahead than the first round," Dixon said. "We have lance choice and our car seems to prefer the left lane. We'll go up there and read the track conditions and try to win the first round race."

The 1995 NHRA Rookie of the Year opened qualifying on Friday by making two solid runs down the Memphis Motorsports Park quarter mile after recording passes of 4.760 at 301.81 and 4.637 at 314.34, his best speed of the weekend.

Dixon, who looks to reach the final round at Memphis Motorsports Park for the fifth straight year, will battle No. 10 qualifier Brady Kalivoda in the opening round of Top Fuel eliminations at 3 p.m. (CT) on Sunday. Dixon is 2-0 in his career against Kalivoda.

ESPN2 will televise two hours of qualifying highlights from the O'Reilly Mid-South Nationals at 10 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, Aug. 21 and show two hours of final eliminations coverage at 10 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, Aug. 22.
