Justin Humphreys working on winning combination for Memphis

Justin Humphreys' home is in Monrovia, Md., but he's been spending a lot of time in Sugar Hill, Ga., recently. Time well spent, he says without hesitation.

Humphreys and his RaceRedi Motorsports crew are being tutored by Warren Johnson, whose 96 victories are tops among all NHRA Pro Stock drivers, and his son, Kurt. The education at the Johnsons' shop is focused on utilizing all the horsepower available in the Johnson engines that Humphreys now uses in is Pontiac GXP.

The engine agreement, begun two races ago in Charlotte, already produced Humphreys' first Pro Stock victory, albeit an uncontested one. When the starter in Kurt Johnson's car malfunctioned and the motor wouldn't start, Humphreys had a solo run to the title in the inaugural event at Charlotte.

"Things have been going good," said Humphreys. "We have been working at Warren's shop, trying to figure out how to run his motors in our car. Everyone out here uses different combinations and we're looking for the right one. We've been able to build a good relationship with Warren and Kurt. They've been a big help to us.

"We've been able to get good data on our runs, which will be good for us next year. We have an idea of what it takes and we are looking forward to going to Memphis."

Memphis Motorsports Park is the site of the O'Reilly Mid-South Nationals, Friday through Sunday, the third of three straight races and the third of six events in NHRA's Countdown to 1 championship series.

Humphreys just missed a top 10 berth and a spot in the finals, and he doesn't mind playing a spoiler's role during the title showdown.

"We'd like to get in four good qualifying runs at Memphis and qualify in the top half of the field," Humphreys said.

On Sunday, he will be going for another win.
