HERBERT SAILS INTO TOP FIVE IN MEMPHIS

MEMPHIS (August 19, 2005) -- Doug Herbert is having a lot more fun these days. The driver of the Snap-on Tools Top Fuel dragster has reason for the increased fun factor at the track: The car is just running better.

Herbert drove to the No. 4 spot Friday night after two rounds of qualifying for the 18th annual O'Reilly Mid-South NHRA Nationals at Memphis Motorsports Park. Pro qualifying continues at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. Final eliminations start at 3 p.m. Sunday.

The Snap-on Tools dragster turned in a 4.655-second and 302.48 mph to take the fourth position with two sessions left.

"It is just so much more fun knowing you have a car that is competing for the top qualifying spot," Herbert said. "Wayne (Dupuy, crew chief) is just picking away at this car and he's making a lot of progress. It's coming together and the performance is proof."

Herbert's first qualifying pass was a 4.806 at 286.74.

"The weather cooled just enough to help us improve on that second pass," Herbert said. "We have to be able to run in the hot conditions in the middle of the day because that's what we race in on Sunday. It's nice to improve, but it's better that we made two passes down the track in the heat.

"The best part is that we are able to learn from every pass down the track and Wayne is putting all that information to good use."

ESPN2 and ESPN2 HD will air all the racing this weekend. Qualifying can be seen at 8 p.m. (ET) on Saturday while the eliminations can be seen at 10 p.m. (ET) on Sunday. NHRA 2Day will start at 11:30 a.m. (ET) on Sunday.
