Baca grabs second consecutive No. 1

MILLINGTON, Tenn. (September 20, 2003) -- David Baca, driver of the Henkelman & Baca Motorsports/American Racing/Waterloo Tool Storage/Skill Clean Top Fuel dragster, set the pace during qualifying for the for the 16th NHRA O'Reilly Mid-South Nationals presented by Pennzoil at Memphis Motorsports Park when he recorded a track record elapsed time at 4.533 seconds, good for No. 1. After assuming the top spot he never looked back finishing qualifying as "King of the Hill."

For Baca, from Brentwood, Calif., it was the second consecutive No. 1 of his rookie year. Baca indicated the team 's philosophy is to try to get firmly in the field on Friday, so that crew chief Johnny West can test the track and/or new equipment and set-ups on Saturday.

"We go all out on Friday and hopefully get ourselves securely in the top half of the field. Come Saturday, we have an understanding with our crew chief Johnny West, if you haven't tested it on Saturday you surely won't try it on Sunday. Today we were just seeing how much the track would hold, especially in the first session. In the second session we thought we had it backed down enough but apparently we didn't get the job done. Good thing we did that because Johnny has a better handle going into tomorrow," said Baca.

Final eliminations for all classes get underway at 11 a.m. (CDT) on Sunday. Baca's opening round opponent will be Rhonda Hartman-Smith, who qualified 16th with a run of 4.826 seconds at 285.05 mph.
