MEMPHIS, Sept. 26 2008 -- Defending O'Reilly Mid-South Nationals Pro Stock winner Dave Connolly got a good start on defending his title Friday by qualifying second for Sunday's event at Memphis Motorsports Park.

Connolly put a 6.599-second time on the board and was briefly number one before Allen Johnson passed him with a 6.591. They set the starting line-up after two more attempts Saturday.

"We had a good day," added Connolly, who is fifth in Countdown to 1 standings. "We made two nice runs Friday. I thought we had something for the No. 1 spot (with the 6.599) . . . but we'll take that run any day.

"The track was good. We'll massage our tune-up and go for the pole Saturday."
