HAGAN DROPS INTO THIRD STARTING SPOT FOR NHRA SOUTHERN NATIONALS
COMMERCE, Ga., – Handing the controls of his Autolite/Diehard Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car, Matt Hagan secured the third starting position here Saturday during final qualifying for the 31st annual NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway.
Hagan posted his best lap – 4.109-seconds at 303.71 mph – during the third qualifying session and as a result set up a meeting with 14th-place qualifier, Paul Lee, in the first round of Sunday’s final eliminations.
“We are definitely moving in the right direction,” said the Christiansburg, Va., cattle farmer. “We’re going back to a set up like we used last year and it’s clearly working.”
This weekend, Hagan is attempting to claim his first victory of the year, while closing the gap in the standings. He arrived in the Peachtree State clinging to sixth-place in the points.
“The set up we have gone back to will be especially important as we get into the heat of the summer, when the variables increase. Tommy DeLago (his crew chief) is going with what is comfortable and results are there – we ran very well in the heat.
“I’m confident in Tommy and the Autolite/DieHard team. We’ll be just fine. Simply stated, we’re just doing our thing.”
