Crew chiefs Okuhara, Shuler make Prestone/FRAM quickest ever as Massey goes 3.728 at Englishtown
ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. (June 1, 2012) - Friday was a memorable night for Spencer Massey.
The driver of the Prestone/FRAM Top Fuel Dragster at Don Schumacher Racing couldn't remember the last time one of his crew chiefs had to wipe rain drops from his windshield before a run.
But that's what one of Massey's crew chiefs did before Massey outran the rain in track- record fashion by producing the quickest-ever run in Top Fuel at 3.728 seconds and 329.91 mph as a major rain storm skirted Old Bridge Township Raceway Park Friday night long enough for him to make history.
The cool air and track conditions were optimum for records.
Massey's run came about a half hour after DSR teammate Ron Capps also made history. Capps drove his NAPA AUTO PARTS Dodge Charger R/T to the second Funny Car run below 4 seconds and became the quickest ever when he went 3.964 seconds at 320.89 mph with crew chief Rahn Tobler to earn the provisional pole in the NHRA Toyota SuperNationals.
"It's just a dream to be driving for Don Schumacher and have guys like Ron as teammates," said Massey, who holds the provisional pole with crew chiefs Todd Okuhara and Phil Shuler tuning the dragster.
"I was watching the other cars go down the track before us and put up excellent numbers," said Massey, who leads the points standings in the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series.
"Todd and Phil both told me if it sticks (to the track) to hold on because it's going to run. I've heard that from them before and they're usually right.
Massey, who could win his first pole of the year to go along with three event titles, was concerned about the pending rain.
"Before I ran it was sprinkling on me and Phil came up with a towel and started wiping off the windshield. He was smiling and laughing and I'm just looking at him. He gives me a thumbs up and I give him a thumbs up back.
"We were just having fun, but I knew there was a chance it could rain at any moment and I had to hurry up and stage the racecar. Then I'm hoping it doesn't smoke the tires and it made it. I knew it was going to be something killer.
"It was like winning a race. It's great having great crew chiefs and great crew guys to put my racecar together and allow me to do what I just did."
Massey's team also holds the fastest run ever, a 332.18-mph blast earlier this year at Concord, N.C.
