KENT, Wash. (Aug. 4, 2012) - There's just something about Pacific Raceways that Spencer Massey especially likes.
It is the site of his first ever final round appearance in 2006 in Top Alcohol Dragster, and now it is where he won his latest Top Fuel Dragster pole for Don Schumacher Racing's FRAM/Prestone team.
"In my first year here racing Top Alcohol Dragster I made it to the final round," said Massey, a 29-year-old resident of Fort Worth, Texas. "We got beat by just a little bit, but it was still just really cool for me.
"I drove all the way from Texas to Washington which is kind of crazy. I believe that was only the second national event I had competed in."
With many more rounds of racing under his belt, Massey is much more experienced as he heads into Sunday's eliminations as the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series points leader.
"Obviously, the cars like the air up here with all of the trees that give off plenty of added oxygen. The FRAM dragster does for sure."
Massey is expecting conditions for the opening round of eliminations to be similar to the late Friday afternoon qualifying run when his FRAM/Prestone dragster clocked a 3.837-second pass at a top speed of 319.60.
"Todd Okuhara has a great tune-up whether it is cold or hot. If it gets cool again, there's going to be a shot during the first round of eliminations for some low elapsed times," Massey said of half his crew chief tandem that includes Phil Shuler. "If conditions are going to be there, I guarantee you'll want your eyes on this FRAM dragster because we could go even lower than our 3.83."
For the FRAM/Prestone Top Fuel team, today was a day of collecting precious data.
"Our goal today was to get the data we needed for race day. We got that data and now we have a racecar that can go down the track.
"Sometimes there are tracks you do well at and things just fall your way. Hopefully my luck can fall that way again and I can get in the final round and get that Wally from Pacific Raceways.
"We are going to just keep to our same motto which is don't beat ourselves." Massey remains the Top Fuel points leader heading into eliminations, leading DSR teammate Antron Brown by five points.
