MARTINO MOMENTS Pit Notes from the Pennzoil Nationals Memphis Motorsports Park Day/Date: Saturday, October 4, 1997 Subject: Final Qualifying Results/Eliminations Preview
Memphis, TN, October 4, 1997 - - Higher temperatures slowed the entire Pro Stock field during Saturday's final two qualifying sessions for the Pennzoil Nationals at Memphis Motorsports Park. As a result, there were no major changes in the line-up for Sunday's eliminations. MaMa Rosa's Pizza pilot Tom Martino placed seventh, with a best elapsed time of 7.001 seconds, and will face number ten qualifier Darrell Alderman in the first round.
This is the third time in 1997 that Martino has placed seventh for eliminations, and the Farmingdale, NJ native hopes to have the same results. Each of the previous times he qualified seventh, the MaMa Rosa's Pizza Pro Stock Firebird has ended the day in the winner's circle.
"It's great to have the MaMa Rosa's Pizza Pro Stock Pontiac back in the top half of the field. The seventh spot has proven to be a lucky one for us, and we hope it continues," stated Martino. "But we'll have to be hooked up right from the start. Darrell (Alderman) has run well, and is strong on the tree. I'm glad we have lane choice - we can use any advantage we can get. Our goal for tomorrow is to advance some rounds, and see where it takes us."
