CAIN NAMED NHRA SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT OF SALES AND MARKETING
GLENDORA, Calif. -- Noted marketing executive Gary Cain has been named NHRA senior vice president of sales and marketing, NHRA President Dallas Gardner announced.
Cain, 40, comes to the National Hot Rod Association after serving as director of channel marketing for New England Business Service (NEBS) since 1994.
Cain will be responsible for all facets of NHRA sales and marketing, including sponsor programs and relations, and corporate development. He started his new duties Nov. 25.
"I'm proud to join the NHRA family," Cain said. "This is a tremendous opportunity to help grow an amazing sport. NHRA Winston Drag Racing is exciting and family-oriented, with great fan loyalty, thanks to the unique bond between racers and fans. My team's job is to make sure that more people and more potential race team sponsors discover just how powerful it is."
Cain comes to NHRA after a distinguished career in consumer brand marketing with NEBS and The Dial Corp., both based in Phoenix.
As director of channel marketing for NEBS, Cain was responsible for all promotions, sales operations and programs, direct mail programs, print advertising and trade shows for the company, the nation's largest manufacturer of business forms and printed products for small businesses.
Cain founded the promotions group at The Dial Corp. during his tenure as a marketing and product manager from 1984-1994. The sports and event marketing programs that Cain pioneered for food and soap products helped Dial achieve 100- to 250-percent gains in retail displays and advertising support.
Sports and event marketing programs that Cain created and adminstered at Dial included the Tone Aerobics and Fitness Challenge, the Children's Miracle Network, the Danskin Women's Triathlon series, the Gatorade Ironman Triathlon World Championship, and title sponsorships of concert tours by The Beach Boys and Wynonna. The Beach Boys' sponsorship generated more than $2 million in additional sales for the Tone brand.
Cain also directed Dial marketing programs with NASCAR, Seattle's Seafair, the NBA's Phoenix Suns, the PGA Tour's Phoenix Open and bass fishing.
"Gary will provide guidance and leadership for NHRA from a sales and marketing standpoint for the 1990s and beyond," Gardner said. "Gary's skills and experience will put NHRA in position to take advantage of the many opportunities that are available.
"I'm very pleased that Gary has become a vital part of the NHRA management team. Because of his outstanding history of achievement with NEBS and Dial, Gary is the ideal person for this new challenge."
Cain, a native of Encino, Calif., received a bachelor of arts degree from California State University at Fullerton in 1979. He earned a master's degree in geography from San Jose State University in 1982 and a master's degree in business administration from the UCLA Graduate School of Management in 1984. He and his wife, Lauren, have a 5-year-old daughter, Shelby, and a 2-year-old son, Zachary.
