Pawuk Among "The Big Nine!"
RICHFIELD, OH 4/12/02 With four of the 23 NHRA POWERade series events completed the level of competition in Pro Stock has never been more evident. Forty-seven drivers have attempted qualifying at the four events run thus far, and of those only nine drivers have managed to make the cut each and every time.
Some of the most well known names in the class have already stumbled, and it's likely that by the end of the year only a very few will be able to say they've participated in eliminations at every race.
"When you look down the list of drivers, and see who's missed the cut, it really lets you know how tough these fields are," says Mark "Cowboy" Pawuk, driver of the Summit Racing Pontiac Grand Am. "I think we've been lucky to have made every race, but really, the credit for that goes to the crew, because they're the ones that really put out, each and every week.
"Even though we've qualified for every race, we've struggled at times, so we're hoping we're turning the corner, and will start to run a little better. We're going to find out this weekend in Houston, that's for sure!"
Along with Pawuk, the nine drivers who have made very field include Darrell Alderman, Bruce Allen, V. Gaines, Tom Hammonds, Warren Johnson, Ron Krisher, George Marnell and Jim Yates.
"There are some terrific racers on this list," Pawuk says, "so I'm pretty excited to be among 'em. Our job now is to keep our Summit Racing Pontiac in the top 16 at every race. We had a really good string going for the last couple of years, and then we ran into some problems late last season. We're going to work our tails off to avoid a repetition of that this season."
