MADISON, Ill. (June 26, 2004) 0x2022 Ron Capps drove his green Skoal RacingSM Chevy Monte Carlo to a performance of 4.900 seconds at 313.15 mph Saturday at Gateway International Raceway to earn the No. 10 qualifying position.

Capps and crew chief Roland Leong continue to progress with the tune-up of Don Prudhomme's green Skoal Racing Chevy flopper as the 14-time NHRA winner drove to the 4.900 at 313.15 effort on the final qualifying session of the weekend. The Southern California driver posted a run of 5.953 at 159.59 on Saturday's opening run.

"Roland (Leong) is still trying to get a feel for the car," Capps said. "He found a few things that have been plaguing us on Friday and we were able to fix those things. So, it was kind of just one day of qualifying for our crew. We wanted to run a little better than the 4.900, but we're real happy with that run. We qualified ahead of (Phil) Burkart, which is something we have to do to get into the Skoal Showdown at Indy. We're happy with things."

Capps, who won the inaugural race at Gateway Int'l Raceway in 1997, faces No. 7 qualifier Eric Medlen in opening round of Funny Car eliminations which kick off at 4:30 p.m. (CT) at the Illinois facility. Capps is 0-1 in his career versus the rookie driver.
