Cory McClenathan sags 200th career Top Fuel qualifying position.
MADISON, Ill. -- Cory McClenathan, 39, driver of the Henkelman & Baca Motorsports Top Fuel Dragster, qualified in the eighth spot (4.817 seconds at 289.76 mph) for tomorrow's eliminations at the NHRA Sears Craftsman in Madison, Ill, just across the river and in sight of the St. Louis arch. By qualifying, McClenathan achieved a milestone in a long, illustrious career. The Anaheim, Calif., driver qualified for the 200th time in a Top Fuel career that began in 1991.
McClenathan reflected on the achievement that was 12 years in the making. "Wow! If you throw out the 2001 season when I didn't race, that's a lot of accumulated races over 10 plus seasons. If you sit down and think about it, that's pretty awesome actually. I'm not the type of person that looks at that stuff but even to me that's a pretty big accomplishment. It's nice to be in the company of the other Top Fuel drivers that have that number and more. Having my name among drivers like Kenny Bernstein and Joe Amato is an honor," said Cory Mac.
Of the 200 times that McClenathan has qualified, 161 of those have been in the top half of the qualified field -- a percentage of 80.5.
McClenathan will be going after another milestone when he squares off against Melanie Troxel, from Parker, Colo., in the opening round of eliminations tomorrow. With a victory over Troxel, Cory Mac could nail down his 300th round win in Top Fuel. Troxel qualified ninth with a pass of 4.830 seconds at 298.73 mph.
In head-to-head competition against Troxel this year, McClenathan has won their only match up to date. For his career McClenathan is 3 to zip against Troxel, including a final round win at the 2000 O'Reilly Fall Nationals at the Texas Motorplex just outside Dallas.
